From Simple to a Less Severe Acne – examples of this kind of acne are small pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads.

This happens when some of your pores are diminished due to the thickness of the top layer of your skin coupled with dead skin cells that spread to the blocked pores which form spots known as white heads and black heads also known as ‘ comedones’.

Note that this acne is not caused by dirt but due to your skin pigment. The oils collected under these pores are what form the pimples we see on our faces or papules, it may not go beyond this in some cases but in some cases, if not properly treated may graduate to severe acne.

Less Severe to Severe Acne – this type of acne is caused by a germ called Propionibacterium.

They live on the skin which does not cause any harm but when a large number of these germs are trapped in sebum, they make the body immune system to react negatively to the body and cause inflammation.

It makes the surrounding skin to be red and become bigger filled with pus (pustules) but in some cases, it becomes bigger and forms small nodules and cysts.

When this acne heal, it remains discolored for months which is known as post- inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is often more visible in people with darker skin.

At times a scar is left on the inflamed spot which stands as a reminder to older people that they once had inflamed acne.

There are some rare causes of acne which can be caused by a certain disease in girls and women known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. This happens as a result of excess production of male hormones in the ovary or adrenal gland.
