February 16, 2017

Skin tone or undertone is your actual skin color. It does not refer to your complexion which is how dark or light you are but it means the color that comes from underneath your skin surface that determines your overall tone quality.

It shows the amount of melanin present in your skin which cannot be changed even when exposed to the rays of the sun or affected by any form of skin problems such as rosacea or acne.

Your complexion may change by the season but your skin tone remains the same because your complexion cannot alter your skin tone. Knowing your skin tone helps your physical appearance generally as it helps you to know the color that befits you and make you look trendy always.

In some cases, you see people put on a particular color outfit and he or she looks trendy and nice on it but someone with similar color can put on the same color and look off.

This is because their undertone is different, and is a pointer that your skin tone determines the color of your dressing and makeup.

When trying to know your skin tone, you have to put two things into consideration, which is

    Your undertone.

The physical color of your skin.

Your physical color is what you see when you stand in front of the mirror which you have an idea about, it entails whether you are light, medium or dark.

Which you must try to take good care of so that the things you apply on it can hide or smooth out with your makeup.

Most beauty experts advise that we should use our undertone than our surface color to select our foundation selection; this is because if the foundation you are using does not match with your undertone it will look off.

So it is very important to understand to understand that your complexion and undertone are two different things.

Ways to know your Skin Tone

The human skin tone is divided into three parts namely:

      Warm skin tone

       Cool skin tone

       Neutral skin tone

When we talk about the warm tone, it goes along with yellow, golden and peach, when we talk of the cool skin tone it goes with blue, red and pink but when we talk of neutral skin tone it goes with the mixture of the colors from warm and cool and olive most times.

Your skin tone can be determined using the following methods namely

     White paper method

     The sunlight method

     Gold and silver foil method

     The vein method

     The blush method

      The ear method

     Color of eye method

  Clothing method

But before you carry out any of these tests on your skin, you have to put some things into consideration which are as follows:

Use a natural light when analyzing your skin such as the sun rays because light from artificial sources can affect the result of the test by interfering.

Before carrying out any of these tests endeavor to make your skin clean and free from any makeup, lotion or toner.

The face is washed before the test, endeavor to wait for 15 minutes before carrying out the test as the process of scrubbing when washing the face can change the original color of your skin and alter the end result of the test.

The test can be carried out in the following ways

     The white paper method – this method involves you looking in a mirror holding a white paper up to your face to see the contrast of your skin on the white paper. You may have the following results;

Rosy or blue – red cast.

     Yellow cast

      Gray color

If your skin turns out rosy, pink, or bluish red, you have a cool skin tone.

If your skin turns out yellowish or shallow, you have a warm skin tone.

If your skin turns out gray, it means you have an olive complexion with a neutral undertone but if you do not fall into any of these cases then you have a neutral skin tone.

The sun method - this is the process of knowing the amount of melanin present in your body by observing how your skin reacts to sun radiation when exposed to it.

The basis of the observation includes how often you get burn when exposed to the sun or how fast you get discoloration when exposed to the sun? Or how easy you get tanned when exposed to the sun?

If you tan easily but rarely burn when exposed to the sun then you have more melanin and you may have warm or neutral tone.

If your skin burns easily but does not tan then you have less melanin and have a cool skin tone. But some dark ebony skin women may not burn easily but still have a cool skin tone.

Gold and silver foil method – this is done by holding a gold or silver foil in front of your face so as it throws light back on your skin. If the gold foil makes your skin glow then you have a warm skin tone.

If the silver foil makes your skin glow then you have a cool skin tone. But if you do not notice any effect of these foils on your skin then you are likely to have a neutral skin tone.

But in the absence of these foils, you can use gold and silver jewelry on your wrist and notice the result.

The vein method - this method involves you standing by a window or outdoor and observe the color of your veins from your wrist. If notice a blue or purple color then you have a cool skin tone.

If you notice a greenish color then you have a warm skin tone. But if you do not notice any of these colors then you have a neutral skin tone.

If you have an olive skin complexion, you can also belong to the group of the neutral skin tone.

The blush method – this involves your skin turning pink or red. If you blush easily then you have a cool skin tone but if you don’t then you have a warm or neutral skin tone.

The ear method – this method can be done by asking a friend to observe the color behind your ear shell. This part of the body is used because it is hardly affected by skin problems or other conditions that may alter the result.

When it is properly examined, if a yellowish color is observed then you have a warm skin tone. If the skin turns out to be pink or rosy then you have a cool skin tone. But if neither of these colors is observed then you have a neutral skin tone.

Color of eyes method – this method uses the color of your eyes to predict your skin tone which is as follows

Those with green, hazel with a gold dot, and blue, golden brown color of eyes have a warm skin tone. But those with hazel with a gray or blue dot, gray, black or deep brown, steel blue color of eyes have the cool skin tone.

Clothing method – this method determines your skin tone by the color that makes you glow when you put it on.

Those that have a cool skin tone glow in sparkling colors like emerald green, blue and purple while those with warm skin tone glow in earth tones like olive green, orange, yellow and red. But if glow in colors from both skin tones then you have a neutral skin tone.
