9 Habits We Have That Makes Us Ten Years Older Than Our Age

 There are some habits we do which consciously or unconsciously make us look older than our age. Some of these habits are listed below.



       Drinking excessively- alcohol is a natural diuretic, drinking in excess cause dehydration which is the removes natural moisture from your body and makes you look older.

Also, it removes healthy nutrients like vitamin A and C from your body and these nutrients are necessary for maintaining vibrant and supple skin. High intake of alcohol is associated with skin cancer. This does not mean you should not drink but in moderation.

      Holding Grudges- forgiveness is what most of us believe in but unfortunately, we don’t practice it, holding grudges against one another is not good for your health, you are adding stress to your life which boosts your level of cortisol. 

    This leads to weight gain, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar, learn to forgive and do not let grudges sap your youthfulness.

       Little or no sleep- researchers found that sleep quality impacts skin function and aging; just a night of bad sleep can make you feel tired and lead to dark circles and bags under your eyes.

      Depriving yourself sleep can damage your skin by increasing your cortisol level and cause poor collagen level which encourages skin aging, poor sleepers have high signs of aging and slower recovery from several environmental stressors.

        To make your skin glow and look youthful try to get 7 – 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. Also, sleeping too long on one side of your face is bad as it can cause wrinkles and sleep lines, try to use a satin pillow case to avoid fine lines and wrinkles.


     Sun Exposure- as good as the sun is to the body, it affects the skin due to regular and prolonged exposure to it, as it weakens the skin cells  and blood vessels as a result of this it causes skin tan, leathery – looking skin, skin pigmentation, reduced skin elasticity and degradation of skin texture.

       There is a  high risk of skin cancer due to this, to prevent these occurrences, protect your skin by wearing a hat, or covering up the skin with clothing or using sunscreen that is broad – spectrum when going out in the sun.

5    Smoking- it is harmful to your health, accelerates aging process due to the dangerous substances in cigarette smoke which deprive your skin cells of oxygen and aids the breakdown of collagen which causes loose saggy skin.

       Smoking can encourage the appearance of deep wrinkles around the mouth area; you may not smoke but spend time with a smoker which is known as second-hand smoking, it results to the same effect. So try to avoid both to restore your skin health.

      Sugary foods- taking a lot of sugary foods affects your weight and waistline which accelerates skin aging, makes the skin dull and wrinkle due to the process called glycation. This is an act where sugar attaches to and destroys proteins like collagen and elastin.

       These affected proteins are needed to keep the skin smooth and flexible. Avoiding sugary foods might not be easy but try to avoid processed sugar intake and opt for natural fruits if the need arises.

     Stress- whenever we are stressed, we tend to frown, this is not good for our health and appearance as over time, the muscles in the face conform to that movement which makes you look older.


       Stress triggers events that cause skin aging at the cellular level, because it encourages the breakdown of the collagen, destroys DNA and encourages the release of pro-inflammatory mediators (cytokines) which causes premature aging signs. Worrying, anxiety or stress affects the skin a great deal, so let’s try to manage our situations and emotions, and always try to put up a smile in all situations.

 Exposure to cold weather- regular exposure to cold weather and low temperatures triggers aging skin as it causes skin dryness, as a result of this, it is advisable to use good moisturizers during cold or winter months.

 Also, we should try to use a humidifier to keep your skin more comfortable and lowers the effects of aging skin.

     Lack of exercise- living without accurate exercise triggers aging skin, this is because exercise helps to tone the muscles and gets your blood flowing. The benefits of adequate exercises reflect on your facial appearance, it helps you look and feel younger.
